Music derived from rock formations –
The pitches that are the basis for this composition were derived through a series of visual experiments. After photographing several interesting rock formations in North Georgia, I chose to focus on one particularly beautiful sandstone formation with swirling, red, iron deposits. My photograph of this rock formation was then transferred to graph paper. The lines of the graph paper were assigned variables such as pitch or timbre. The lines of the rock formation, superimposed on the graph, helped me to derive the series of pitches. So in a very real way, this piece of music is inspired by and replicates the rock formation in my original photograph.
Though this may seem an academic experiment, the music that resulted is quite beautiful: a two movement work in Chopin-esque and Minimalist styles. Duration: 6.5 minutes
